funded by cbs >>> good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. u.n. ambassador susan rice travels to capitol hill today to confront some of her toughest critics. she'll discuss and explain her comments about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya, the first of several meetings with key lawmakers, a test of sorts as the president considers nominating rice to be the next secretary of state. margaret brennan has our report. >> reporter: u.n. ambassador susan rice hopes to put that controversy to rest, and if she succeeds, it would remove the largest political hurdle to her nomination as secretary of state. at 9:30 this morning, rice will meet behind closed doors with three of her most vocal critics, republican senators john mccain, kelly ie ya and lindsey graham. an aide to mccain says that rice requested the meeting last week. it could be decisive. mccain says he would consider her nomination if she answers questions to his satisfaction. but he wants to know she didn't mention that the intelligence community was linked to the attack. he accused her of misleadi

they will not accept the nomination of u.n. ambassador susan rice as a replacement for secretary of state hillary clinton. >> we'll do whatever is necessary to block the nomination. >> reporter: senators john mccain and lindsey graham said rice was either lying or incompetent when she made this statement five days after the attack. >> we don't have information at present that leads us to conclude this was premeditated or preplanned. >> reporter: president obama said the ambassador was presenting the intelligence information she was given. he challenged those who attacked ambassador rice. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody they should go after me. >> reporter: senator mccain accepted that offer. >> the president of the united states, the commander-in-chief is the most responsible and i hope the president has no illusions about our view of his responsibility. >> reporter: mccain and graham want a watergate style committee to investigate the benghazi attack. and general petraeus will testify here on capitol hill tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. back to you. >>>

while she's in the region. for now, the head of the u.n. is trying to get both sides to hold their fire without success. mosques in gaza issued the prayer for morning prayers today, even as bombs and missiles rained down around them. the israeli military says it hit about 100 terror sites overnight, including the islamic national bank in gaza city that israel says is used to fund terror operations. hamas militants have launched more than a thousand rockets into israel during this week-long battle. palestinian officials say 38 more people were killed monday, including women and children. israel says it's trying to minimize civilian casualties. >> the problem is the terrorists are hiding these rocket launchers deep inside civilian areas and mosques and schools and people's homes, firing them at our civilians. it's very hard to get to this equipment, but it's necessary. >> reporter: president obama is sending secretary of state hillary clinton to israel to help with cease fire negotiations. she'll arrive today and meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu tomorrow. >> the bottom
